An opportunity to represent our peers

In order to provide an environment that allows all members of Castle Hill Primary School community to thrive, we are always open to constructive input and value the opinions of all our pupils. Our School Senate, which is pupil-led and inclusive, ensures that everyone’s voice can be heard.

In September each year, pupils in each class are invited to give speeches to apply for a Student Senator role. Following these speeches, their peers are given the opportunity to vote for two candidates, usually a boy and a girl, who they believe will make a suitable Student Senate representative for their class. Teachers also have the opportunity to vote and can nominate pupils for a wide range of reasons. Using this information, Mr Martin and the Student Senate staff team (Miss Wheble and Miss Jones) appoint two children from each class and our Student Senate for the year is established.

Class meetings are held regularly, led by the class Student Senate representatives, where topics are discussed and class decisions are made. All of the children in each class are given the opportunity to vote and therefore, every pupil at Castle Hill Primary School plays an active role in the school decision-making process.

Subsequently, the two Student Senators from each class will present the outcomes in the Student Senate feedback meeting with the Student Senate staff team. The Student Senators meet regularly with Mr Martin and Miss Wheble at Rooksdown and Mr Martin and Miss Jones at Greenbank. The meetings begin with a greeting of "salutations" and the class-level issues are discussed. The meetings are led by a chairperson, with Miss Wheble and Miss Jones providing guidance in the decision making-process.

  MFL
Student Senate Question Impact
How would you like to celebrate
Languages Day this year?
A similar question was asked last year and Student Senators shared results with Miss Scarles (MFL Lead). Based on the opinions of all our pupils, British Sign Language (BSL) was taught for Languages Day and was well received by all of our pupils and staff. It was enjoyed by all so much that this question was asked again this year. After listening to the opinions of all our pupils, Mandarin will be taught, however, this will coincide with our Chinese New Year celebrations in 2024.
